Week of November 24--Short Short Week

Last week we had a very short week.

Stone Soup:
We read five different stone soup stories last week.  All of them had a common lesson about cooperation especially amid scarcity.

Thanks to you, we had a lot of ingredients to put in our stone soup:
potatoes, carrots, celery, green beans, beans, corn, tomatoes to name a few.

Yum! Some kids LOVED it, some, uhm…did not.

Tables were set and ready for the kids.

Ready? Set?  Go!

Here are the kiddos ready to eat.

Can we eat now?

Cody, Maddy and Samuel are ready to eat!

Hannah, Gio, and S. are also ready to eat.

Our stone soup celebration was lots of fun. The kids had great manners and did not spill anything.  Yeah!  ALL kids loved the fresh bread.  We will have to make that more often.

Special Classroom Volunteer:
We are lucky this year to have a volunteer from the community who wants to help out just in OUR Kinder classroom (meaning we don't have to share her).  Mrs. Joan Hayes comes into our classroom to help out every Tuesday afternoon.  She helps the kids during our read aloud, writing and math time.  In this picture she is reading a stone soup story to the class.

Week of November 17

What did we do this week?

Sparky the Eagle:
On Monday, November 17, we came back to our classroom and found that Jason, our evening custodian, had left Sparky in our room because we had done a great job cleaning.  Sparky travels to all kinder classrooms and we take turns "earning" him.

Evan's Birthday:
On Tuesday, November 18, we celebrated Evan's 6th b-day with some donuts that his parents brought in to share.  We sang happy birthday and enjoyed a sweet treat.

Evan enjoyed eating his delicious donut.

The kids sang to Evan.

Food Adventures:
On Thursday, November 20, we had a wonderful visit from Clara Baker.  She took us on a food adventure.  First she talked about the different food groups.  The kids explored a "secret" vegetable that was hidden in a box (a beet).  Then she gave the kids an opportunity to taste a blueberry, cranberry, and a piece of beet.  She mixed them in a blender with some yogurt and milk.  Finally, we enjoyed a nice smoothie.  She also sent home the recipe with the kids.  The kids had so much fun.  She finished the session with a great book about trying different foods.  If you can donate $1 towards her visits we would be appreciate it!  She will be back to visit us in December.

Clara discussing the food groups.

Clara and the box which had a beet hidden in it.
The kids tried to identify it by touch…no one guessed what it was.

Clara talked about beets and how they grow.

The kids were very attentive!

Clara blended a yummy smoothie.

Yum!  Some kids loved it, others did not.

Maddy's bday:
On Friday, November 21, we celebrated Maddy's 6th birthday.  Her mom brought in cupcakes for us to enjoy.  We sang happy birthday and then enjoyed the sweet treat.

Maddy enjoyed her cupcake after we sang to her.

Beautiful cupcakes!

Art Project:
On Friday we used watercolors and Sharpies for the first time.  The kids made some wonderful projects that will be sent home on Tuesday.

Maddy, Gabby, Cody, Evan, Garrett, and Hannah loved painting.

Nikolas, Gage, S., Lillian, Jakob and Gio worked on their drawings using Sharpies before painting.

Week of November 10

What did we do last week?

Writer's Workshop Time:
Every day we do some sort of writing, whether it's copying our monthly themed words down, creating sentences with the monthly words, writing the room or working in our writing journals.  The kids LOVE to write.  We start with making a picture of something we want to share, we label our picture and then we try to add a sentence or two.  We do not focus on spelling, instead we focus on getting our thoughts down.  The kids know how to use our two word walls that we have in the classroom to find words they might want to use.

Kids can be found all over the classroom during our writer's workshop time.

Sometimes the kids like to write while laying down on the carpet.

Alex is focusing on his writing and is sitting in front of the SMART board
to find words we talked about.

Nikolas likes to write at his table.

Gabby enjoys writing at one of our side tables.

Abigail and Lillian really like to work together when they do their writing.

Jogathon:
Once a year we have our jogathon.  This year we had it on Friday, November 14.  The kids ran laps to earn money for our school.  The kids had a blast running.  I opted to walk this year.

The kids after the jogathon.  They received a sheet with the number of laps run and a little prize.

I forgot to take pictures of the kids running.  These pics were taken after they got done.
Nikolas was looking forward to sitting down after his long run.

Miri was running to go sit on the steps after 25 minutes of jogging.

After the kids were done running, the parent volunteers added up the laps and gave the kids a prize.
In this picture, you can see Garrett's parents helping out.  You can also see my elbow on the left side.  Tyler Phillips our PE teacher took some pics for me since I was too busy walking :)
A big thanks to all the parents who were able to come help out!

Artist in Residence:
Sharon King, our wonderful artist in residence talked to the kids about Frida Kahlo and her use of oil paints.  Sharon then showed us a print of the painting "Still Life with Parrot" from 1951.  She taught the kids how to make each section of the painting one step at a time.  The kids did a wonderful job following directions.  I am SO proud of them.

Sharon modeled each step on the whiteboard.  This is towards the end of the demonstration.

Alex did a sketch of the watermelon.

Josie and Aiden added color to their picture with pastels.

Miri did a great job adding pastels to her picture and then blending in the colors with her finger.

Cody had fun using pastels.

Alex was very creative with his coloring.

Gabby and Lillian were working very hard at choosing their colors.

Nikolas had fun using the pastels.

Kernan did a great job adding colors to his project.

Buddy Class:
On Thursday, November 13, we met with our third grade buddy class (Mrs. Tubbs' class).  The kids interviewed each other to get to know each other and then read books.  I  cannot post pics because I do not have release forms from their parents, but I am working on that.  You should see how the kids worked so well with their buddies.  Our kinders felt special having an older buddy and the 3rd graders felt special knowing that they needed to act like role models for the kinders.

Week of November 3

OMSI Assembly:
We had a fun assembly on Tuesday, November 4.  OMSI came to visit us and taught us about electricity.  Jaimie our presenter talked about the types of electricity and then had kids come up to the stage for the experiments.  While none of the kids from our kinder class were called to go up, we had some of our siblings on the stage.

Jaimie presented some cool electricity facts.

She created static electricity by rubbing the balloon on her hair.

She wanted to have lots of static electricity, so she got a bigger balloon.  The kids loved this part.

Then Jaimie talked about current electricity.
She talked about AC and DC and how they flow into our homes.
She also reminded the kids to always being safe around electricity.

Nikolas' sister Althea was able to experience some effect of electricity.

Althea did a great job!

Evan's sister Anna was able to come up for one of the experiments too.

Anna was a little nervous, but she did a great job too!

A BIG thank you to our PTA for providing this assembly to the whole school!!

Turkey Projects:
We worked on two turkey projects on Thursday, November 6.  Of course I did not take pictures until the end.  Managing the paint and 26 5-6 year olds was a challenge.  A fun one, but one that resulted in only a few pics at the end.

Maddy and Gabby worked on thumbprint turkey painting.
Wait until you see all the turkeys: they look awesome!!!

Alex had a blast painting with his thumb.

Free Choice:
We have "free choice" on Wednesday and Thursday afternoon.  The kids can explore and play with pretty much anything in the classroom which of course includes our toy area and kitchen area.  Our latest additions to our kinder classroom, Zander and Vaughn had a blast in our sensory bin.

Zander and Vaughn had fun with the split pea sensory bin.

The usual suspects played with the latest Bionicles that I put out:
Garrett, Evan, Gage, Jacob, Kolton and Samuel all enjoyed playing together.

Nikolas, Lillian, and Aiden had a blast building with the blocks.

S., Miri, and Hannah played dress up and "cooked" something in our kitchen area.

Kernan enjoyed "cooking" in our kitchen.
